The March 2012 issue of the new redesigned Glamour

I have a confession. It's kind of big deal. Are you ready?

I don't read any of the fashion magazines. Sad to say, but that ship has sailed long ago. I'm a little heartbroken about it if you want to know the truth. Magazines were so much a part of my life; from growing up in Buffalo and reading my older sister's subscription to Vogue, to my high school years in Pittsburgh and devouring my own subscription to the "brand new in the U.S." Elle. And then of course, my many years working at some of the most glossy of the fashion mags: Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and In Style.

My disinterest in magazines didn't just happen once I had given birth to my now 1 year old daughter (yes, Miss Thing has turned 1 already as of Jan 31st!). It was a slow process that started....well....about a few years before I resigned from my job at In Style!

But it really kicked in once I got to Omaha and continued in full force as the years passed. My interest in looking at fashion just wasn't there anymore. But didn't I need to know what was "in fashion" and "trendy" for Trocadero?

Nah, not really. My store has always been an homage to "the little finds" those things that I loved while living in NYC and continue to enjoy. It's also more about the classic, solid, seasonal items that are perennial favorites. And then it's about discovering the perfect _____ and showcasing it. When the store is peppered with a few "trendy" items for the season, that's enough for me. And I really don't need a fashion magazine to tell me what is in right now. I have my own radar for that (or the internet!).

When I saw this article today in the New York Times, it made me think about the magazines I used to read and love. I never was much of a Glamour reader except for a brief period during college. So my initial reaction was, "Good for Cindi Leive! (the editor-in-chief)" for changing it up....except that by the words of the article, it doesn't sound like it's much different from what Cosmopolitan is offering these days...or Marie Claire....or In Style.

I flipped through an In Style about 2 years ago and it had photos of people I used to work with on its pages. I don't remember the last time a model was on the cover of Glamour. And I don't know about you, but I am so much interested in seeing on the pages of my fashion magazines, clothing and accessories that we can't see or get, instead of the "copycat" items that aren't really the same. I don't want to see the watered down versions -- I can do that myself by driving to the mall -- I want to see the real deals, the stuff that we "normal folk" don't get to see. I want to see on the pages of fashion magazines the designer stuff, the runway, the exclusives.

Instead, magazines have all turned into one another (In Style is now Lucky, Glamour is now In Style, Marie Claire is now Glamour). And they're all mini catalogues showcasing -- dare I say it -- mass advertiser's products. I don't want to see the funnel coat from Ann Taylor. I want to see the original from Prada. I don't get to see that living in Omaha. If I want to see the Ann Taylor version, I can hop online or drive to Village Pointe. I also think it's important to let the consumer interpret their own version and "discover" the look-a-like. I'm not into the masses wearing the same thing because it was featured in a magazine. And, yes, I understand the business of magazines...and that they are bound to editorially feature all those advertiser products or else risk losing hundreds of thousands of dollars if the company decides to...well, pull their advertising for lack of editorial coverage! I know. I know. It's one dirty game....but it's the truth, Ruth (and not Ruth Whitney, the landmark editor of Glamour, who was unfairly pushed out by the Conde Nastys and then died less than a couple years later).

I don't want dumbed-down fashion in my glossies. And I also don't want every magazine looking like one another. So until that changes, I think I'll stick to my ban. I don't know; what do you think? Am I missing something?

"The Artist" makes a boldly quiet statement

People are talking loudly about a silent film. Why?

Because it was made in the age that can produce technology of video with sound that can fit in your pocket. Though they weren't the first to try to recapture the silent film era ie. 1976 Silent Movie a parody comedy by Mel Brooks.

Being an old movie buff and a huge Charlie Chaplin fan I found myself curious and almost skeptical about why a silent movie would be essentially re-produced to emote the ghost of movie past. What happened when I went to see it? I laughed out loud, I got teary and short of breath and was flat out charmed. I'm sure that there is a large population of spoiled modern viewers who would liken watching a silent movie to a supreme form of torture. Though I wouldn't be surprised that they find themselves laughing and crying along with the rest of us.

Funny thing is, it didn't really remind me of any old movie, I'd ever seen. It didn't try to copy anything in particular instead it seemed to carry a deeper message behind it than to purely entertain. Being silent in a world filled with sound, it forces us to pay attention and fill in our own blanks. And once I was paying attention, there was a unmistakeable strong, albeit unspoken, dialog about our own constant struggle to make way for new technology. Which in this current age is more relevant than ever.

I love this wallet from Rebecca Minkoff -- it reminds me of an old Anya Hindmarch double "Loose Pockets" that had one side as "save" and the other as "spend." We at the Troc used to do a lot of Anya Hindmarch business....that is, until the economy went bust and people just weren't willing to spend as much money on handbags and other leather goods. It's too bad because Anya makes some of the coolest accessories and we sure do miss them at Trocadero! But perhaps another season we can bring them back into the mix...

My friend owns an amazing consignment shop called Fashion Avenue 2 in the Minneapolis suburb of Wayzata. It is an offshoot of the original Fashion Avenue located in Edina on the main shopping drag. Both locations have -- without a doubt -- some of the best deals on designer labels. And so much of it is brand new, never been used items from designers like Anya Hindmarch, Lanvin, Mulberry, Yohji Yamamoto, Chanel, Dior, Catherine Malandrino, Vince, and the list goes on! We're talking ultra-deluxe designer as well as the contemporary brands that you know and love.

The best part is that much of their inventory is current season merchandise, never used, tags still on them...at 50% off or more. On their Facebook fan page, there is a brand new Louis Vuitton bag at 50% off the retail price, a never been worn black Y-3 bomber jacket originally $510 for $175 and so many other fabulous fashion finds. Honestly, if I lived closer, it would be the only place I would shop. For both myself and for gifts. You cannot beat the quality of the merchandise -- because it's mostly all brand new or very, very gently used. And I know that the gently worn items are even better deals because they're not brand spanking new.

How do I know so much about Fashion Avenue 2? Because I'm both a customer and a consignor. I had the opportunity to visit Minneapolis a couple years ago and finally got to see the store in action. I was so blown away by the terrific items stocked at both locations. If you're a fashion "whore," this is the place for you. Again, you might love me for telling you about this place but you might also hate me for making you spend all your savings there!

But just as the wallet says, there will be spending...but you most certainly (in some ways) will be saving as well. Heck, if you buy that Vuitton, you'll have saved $1,725!

Golden Globes 2012 Red Carpet: Round Two

There's nothing more glamorous than a red carpet event. Why some celebrities choose this moment to have their two-year-old pick out an outfit for them is completely beyond me (I'm looking at you, Sarah). Below, see my top picks (and a couple of my worst-dressed candidates).

The Good:

Dianna Agron in Giles: This 'Glee' star heated up the Golden Globes in this fire-engine red dress with a matching red lip. The bodice of her dress also features my favorite detail of the night - laser cut swans.

Charlize Theron in Dior: I completely agree with Alice's assessment of Charlize's soft yet sexy ensemble.

Emma Stone in Lanvin: I'm partial to anyone who wears Lanvin, and particularly partial to Emma Stone's personal style. Although I don't love the silver eyeshadow, I can't help but adore this two-toned dress.

Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci: I love that she sticks to her character on the carpet. This Nina Ricci number was a bit softer than her recent choices, and I loved how her soft makeup and fluttery eyelashes played against her severe part. She played with contrast and the result is truly gorgeous.

Freida Pinto in Prada: Freida consistently chooses colors that are unbelievably flattering for her skin tone. I loved the texture on this Prada dress, and I'm glad to see her add a bold accessory to boost the look.

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen: Absolutely stunning. Reese manages to look completely effortless and totally sexy all in one - both adjectives that I wouldn't have used to describe her style five years ago.

The Bad:

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Monique Lhuillier: Sarah's two-year-old daughter chose this dress for her. While that anecdote is cute, this gown clearly reflects it. Don't take style advice from someone who can barely dress themselves.

Piper Perabo in Theyskens' Theory: This sheer gown is an interesting choice, but it was Piper herself that really put this dress at the bottom of the pile for me. She was prancing around and fussing with the silhouette of it all night. It would take someone with the right attitude (and the right accessories) to pull this off, and I don't think that person is Piper.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu: How can someone who is nominated for playing Marilyn Monroe, arguably the sexiest actress of all time, not inject an OUNCE of it into her Golden Globes dress? She's a stunningly beautiful young woman, and this ensemble doesn't demonstrate it at all.

While I live-tweeted last night during the Globes as an experiment in tweeting, I couldn't help but comment on the dresses from the red carpet. There were the obvious hits and misses. The themes: fishtails, plunging v-necklines, nudes, shades of red and the every ubiquitous strapless numbers.

Below, my top picks of the night. And one of my least favorite looks as well...

Charlize in Dior Couture. She often does not disappoint and she didn't this year. My favorite total look of the night. Loved her diamond headband and soft waves of her hair.

Diane Lane in Reem Acra. It's not the most exciting dress but I think it's a very elegant and age appropriate dress. I think for women over 40+, strapless and sleeveless just aren't the most flattering and I love that she has a little capped sleeve on this one. She is simply gorgeous and ages beautifully.

Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci. Talk about year of the mermaid! Her alabaster skin against the fish scale design of the dress in the iridescent green with the plunging v-neckline...it all worked for her.

Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka. Regal in navy and very tasteful but stylish. I like this look on her compared to some of the more sexy frocks she has donned in years past.

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen. Or is is Pamela Anderson? Wow, what a new marriage can do for someone! Love the red dress, love the tousled bed head hair. She has never been sexy to me -- more sweet than sexy -- but this look was very different for her and I liked it.

Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci. She has totally stuck her Girl with the Dragon Tattoo persona and shed her sweet, soft brown hair girl from The Social Network and her real life in general! For the time being, I like this very sleek side of her. It's a tad severe -- but so was the movie, right? I think the dress fits the hairstyle and make up. She nailed it.

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang. Seriously, this woman is both sexy and a true comedic actress. Who else is that? And she was a true knockout in the dress. Love that it was navy and not red, that it was tasteful and elegant (it's Vera, after all) and she was true to herself. With the blown out straight hair to boot? Yay for Sofia!

Stacy Keibler in Valentino. Okay, so some people are only paying attention to her arm candy and Best Actor winner, George Clooney, but I couldn't help but be wow-ed by her. It's a transformation happening before our very own eyes. She's gorgeous (those long legs!), but the dress was perfection. Her hair was tousled just so and everything just clicked.

My least favorite look: Julie Bowen in Reem Acra. It did not evoke memories of Grace Kelly. I know it should have but it didn't. Instead she looked like she was in Halloween costume trying to be a princess. To pull that dress off, she needed to look edgier. Charlize could have rocked it in the right way. Julie made the dress way too precious. With that hair. With just being her. She should have gone for a great plunging v-neckline with smokey eyes. Not that she would have ever come close to Sofia but at least she would have been interesting. Fire your stylist, dear. You need a new look!

Modern Technology Playtime

Tonight for one night only, FilmStreams theater, DaOMA (Design Alliance Omaha) and Omaha Creative Institute are debuting a film that had never been properly released in the U.S.

"Playtime" (1967) by Jacques Tati is a virtually silent commentary on the cold, vast and impersonal nature of technology that was becoming predominant in our modern age. It took 2 years to film and another 3 years to release. For lack of adequate skyscrapers, Tati decided to build his own building for a set that would become a film studio and ended bankrupting the production.

I found this old poster of the film online and loved it's graphic image of a body filled with buttons and directional signs and I thought more poignant than it's schitzophrenic, messy current poster image but then again I haven't seen the movie yet.

I am excited to see this piece of cinematic history on the big screen. Considering how much technology continues to direct even more of our lives this day and age it would be interesting compare impressions between now and then. If you get the chance to see it please share your feedback.

Enjoy a French 75 cocktail to start your New Year's party off with a bang! This potent cocktail was said to have such a kick that it was aptly named after the French 75mm field gun. Simple, strong and bubbly, this classic champagne cocktail is the perfect drink to toast the New Year. Cheers!

Ingredients:

-3 ounces gin

-3 ounces fresh lemon juice

-4 tsp granulated sugar

-1 1/2 cups ice

-1 cup chilled champagne (Any kind works, but I prefer extra dry)

-lemon twists for garnish

Preparation:

1. In a cocktail shaker, combine gin, lemon juice, sugar and ice and shake

2. Strain cocktails into 2 champagne flutes and top off with champagne

3. Garnish with a lemon twist and enjoy!

America the Beautiful

I decided to do things a little bit different this time around, so here is a documentary review, let me know what you guys think!

I watched the documentary, America the Beautiful (written, produced and directed by Darryl Roberts in 2007) on Hulu a little over a week ago, and I’ve been trying to figure out what route to take so I could share it with you all. The truth is, it’s one of those films you’ll have to check out for yourself. Sure, I can share the general outline of the story and pop a few alarming quotes in here, which I already planned on doing, but, you can see how realistic it is when you actually watch it. Do I think you should clear your schedule for it? Not necessarily. I believe we are all aware of the issue at hand; this documentary just brings it to the forefront of our minds. However, if you have time to spare, I do recommend checking it out.

The first few minutes of the film had males of different ages and types expressing their personal views on women. What they want in a women. “Thank God for cloning. If you like your Pam Andersons you can just run ‘em off in a manufacturer and eliminate nasty chicks,” was one male view.

The focus of the film is on a 12-year-old African American model, Gerren Taylor. She took the runway head-on and was more or less thrown into an adult world. Throughout the film you can see how she rises to the top, grows up, gains a few curves and it suddenly became increasingly harder for her to find work.

Another girl, 15-year-old Maggie, has dedicated her whole life to modeling and acting. We’re talkin’ modeling and acting classes and home schooling. Maggie does however, have a slight “belly” as her mother calls it. She so kindly mentions liposuction as an option if Maggie can’t get rid of it. “If that’s what we need to do, then we’ll do it,” says Maggie’s mother.

Her daughter responds with: Plastic surgery is a women’s best friend.

Speaking of plastic surgery, I’m sure some of you have taken part in the guilty pleasure of watching Dr. 90210, yeah? Or are familiar with a few popular faces of plastic surgery? Did you know that some of these so called plastic surgeons were not board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery during the time when this was filmed? You can call the board yourself and find out who really has the skills and who is sliding under the radar.

One of my close friends, might I add… she’s got curves, is black and beautiful and embraces every second of it…thought it was just plain sad. In the beginning portion flashed Victoria’s Secret ads across the screen, saying how unrealistic advertising makes expectations on women. The question was then asked: who benefits from it? “No one benefits from women feeling inferior,” said CG, “we’ve got a long way to come and I doubt we will make any progress because the damage has already been done.”

Towards the end of the film, Darryl Roberts is talking with Gerren again and she chimes in and pronounces: I’m ugly. Period. Point Blank. Before Roberts can get a word in she cuts him off again and forcefully says: “Period.”

“By the end it showed how self conscious she really was, which I felt showed that the more beauty centered you are, the more self conscious you are, thus showing how much more unnecessarily critical you are. Especially of yourself,” said CG.

Holiday Craft Time, a Good Way to Spread the Cheer

Last weekend a couple friends and I hosted an afternoon of cider, cheesy chili and plenty of silly holiday craft making. Before that my feet were dragging into the inevitable season changes and the holiday spirit. It so happened this ended up on the first snow day of the year and spending it warm indoors with happy people sparking creativity everywhere was just what I needed to flow into the season.

If you are thinking of having a holiday get together, try your own craft time on a lazy weekend afternoon. You can do anything simple from collaging holiday cards, baking cookies, gluing things on ornaments or more complex like sewing a stocking or painting a picture.

It's such a great way to get into the spirit, spending quality time with friends old and new. Here are some great websites to get you inspired!

Shin Scissorhands

A few years ago, my friend Shin An was featured in VOGUE as one of New York City's best "underground" hair stylists. At the time she worked either for Mark Garrison or Paul Labrecque, two of the best salons in the city. The VOGUE story focused on those stylists that had a "cult-like" following that weren't exactly the "marquee" names on the door. With the first major snowfall of the season falling outside my window, it's time I've come to terms with my closet. Every year, I struggle to switch out its contents with the passing of spring, summer, fall and winter. In all honesty, I'm a true believer in "seasonless" dressing - for the most part, I only purchase pieces that I can wear all year round.

To prove this philosophy, I've taken three of last summers' trendiest pieces and demonstrated how to transition them into a perfectly wearable winter ensemble.

The Maxi Skirt

The floor-length skirt was one of my favorite pieces from this past summer. There's something so effortless and easy about tossing on a maxi skirt with a white tee and a great necklace and heading for the door. Mine is so well-loved that I couldn't bear to pack it up, so instead I'll be pairing it with a cropped sweater. I am obsessed with these suede wedges, but I also like the idea of swapping those out for a pair of rugged boots for running errands.

The Lace Tee

A great lace tee is a must-have for me. It's the simplest item to dress up or down for any occasion. Throw on a pair of great colored corduroy trousers and a rugged black boot and you're ready for just about anything!

The Romper

Most people would say that a romper is a summer-only option, but I dare to disagree. I sport all my shorts with tights during the winter - in fact, so much so that my friends like to joke that I "never wear pants," because I'm always in shorts, skirts and dresses no matter what the season. With a thick pair of tights, chunky sweater, and riding boots, this lightweight romper is winter-ready.

Can't Live Without: Fendi Bag

I own a lot of handbags. A lot. I'm talking M-A-N-Y. With a capital M.All joking aside, I really have so many purses, totes and handbags that I'm amused by the ones that I always turn to, no matter what. I find it surprising that the ones I turn to are not always the most roomy, or the most expensive, or the most interesting design-wise. They're often the "unsung heroes" so-to-speak, of my closet full of bags. Sometimes a bag I (aghast!) purchased, sometimes a sample sale bargain, sometimes a freebie.

Here is another item in my closet that I Can't Live Without. Welcome, brown leather Fendi bag!

I don't remember the year when I purchased this bag at the Fendi sample sale, but I do remember I got it for the bargain basement price of $50. This must have been around 1998-2000 because it was all about the Fendi baguettes -- made famous by Sex and the City -- which made the bag a household name in 1997.

I have some "Mama" baguettes from that same era and while they're absolute works of art, I always find myself going to this bag. It's pretty small but it seems to hold all the basics and then some. I often use this bag as my "home base" and then place it inside a larger tote that holds diapers, make up, my first-aid "kit" (of bandages, Neosporin and ibuprofen), and lots of other things that just weigh down my bag.

The leather on this bag is seriously "like buttah." I love the chocolate brown with the vibrant purple satin lining as well as the buckle. The bag's insides are also what makes it so special: it is a "framed" bag with three separate compartments. The center section has a clasp so you can put more serious items in there that you don't want to "accidentally" spill out of the bag. Then on either side are spacious sections that are very easy-access for a phone, lipstick, etc.

I never used this bag when I lived in New York. It just wasn't functional enough for me. I dragged it out on some occasions...quick brunches with friends or a dinner out on a weekend night. But during the week I needed a workhorse that could haul all my work papers and the stuff that usually came at press appointments (very heavy lookbooks).

In the past couple years, I've probably used this bag at least 100 times. If I don't have Annabel in tow, I take this little baby to the supermarket, to lunch, to run errands. It's definitely earned a Top 5 Favorite Bag in my closet. Yes, a Top 5! I almost can't believe it myself!

When that cheap appliance breaks that you have to replace once a year, that pair of shoes that lasts for 3 months before falling apart. Not only does more go into the landfill but the amount of money we spend replacing cheap items that fall apart on us is shockingly more that the really nice item we actually wanted. Fashion Books to Give and to Receive

The other day my amazon.com copy of my former colleague at In Style Hal Rubenstein's book 100 Unforgettable Dresses arrived on my doorstep. I loved that the title really tells it all...that they're unforgettable and not-so-much the subjective "best of" dresses. Flipping through the book, there was dress after dress that were absolutely the ones that you'd be hard pressed not to remember.

I like that it was a mixture of red carpet dresses as well as ones from films, runways and daily life. Mixed with the storytelling that is uniquely Hal at his best, this is definitely a great coffee table book to give and to get. We don't have it at the Troc quite yet so you'll just have to order it from amazon.com like I did.

One dress that was not included was the Shalom Harlow modeled Alexander McQueen one from his Spring/Summer 1999 collection. Hal included the very memorable Kate Moss hologram dress (one that I saw live at his Fall/Winter 2006 show). This was truly mesmerizing and gives me chills watching it again.

There are some obvious dresses in the book and some surprising ones. Can you guess some of the dresses that made the cut?

Adventures in Chicken Pt. Deux

Last week I posted about my chicken roasting adventures. I was inspired to turn my chicken meal into a week full of meals after watching an episode of the Nate Berkus Show about making leftovers stretch. Since I only cook for one to two people (myself and a friend), I figured I would at least get a few wraps and a salad or two out of it, something different each day. What actually transpired was the chicken sitting in the fridge the rest of the week. As I was determined to use it for something, I decided to use a recipe I had saved from Giada De Laurentiis for a California Turkey Chili, only replacing the turkey with chicken. Warm, perfect-for-winter spices, hearty chicken and cannellini beans just seemed too enticing to not try. A simple recipe made for a delicious dish rich with flavor.

After making this dish a couple of times, I realized that hand chopping the fresh ingredients

yields a better result than a food processor (which dices too small and the vegetables get lost).

I also found that (at least for my personal preference) tossing cooked and shredded chicken in the pot with the onions, peppers, garlic and celery as opposed to adding chunks of raw chicken to cook with them makes for a better texture of the overall chili.

The end result was an excellent blend of flavors. The poblano peppers and chili powder added heat, while the cinnamon, cloves, and brown sugar added warmth and slight sweetness to round out the heat and then the creaminess of the beans bringing it all together. I served it over rice pilaf, but this chili can also stand on its own.

Dishes like this are so perfect for the holiday season. With all of the turkey, chicken and other various meats and vegetables, making the items stretch after the family tires of the first couple nights of Thanksgiving or Christmas leftovers is a wonderful option to prolong the enjoyment and reduce waste.

I can be one of two things:

1. Health freak

2. Junk food freak

It usually goes in spurts, you know, where you all of a sudden one day up and decide to rid your body of anything greasy, sweet or savory. I can manage for a short period of time...an extremely short period that is. I'm 21 so I usually go out on the weekends, (if I'm not too busy cramming for an exam of course) and well, the 2:00a.m. dinner bell chimes in my head saying it's time for some extreme carb loaded, greased up something or other. Who wants to eat a piece of whole grain bread to soak up alcohol? Not I.

Around spring time last year I decided to embark on an exercise mission. Not attempted alone, because let’s face it, that doesn't work either. My workout at the gym before my exercise mission consisted of a light run, a few ab workouts and some arm curls if I was lucky. Weak sauce compared what I was about to experience.

One of my good friends told me about a bootcamp she had been doing at a small gym and how it basically was kicking her ass. There's no other way to describe it. So I thought, meh, why not? I could use it.

Do you know what it feels like to not be able to straighten out your arm after lifting weights? Well, I do and it’s painful, yet so worth it.

The bootcamp lasted for six weeks, and I went three times a week. I felt so much better about myself when it ended, it was almost a tad bit addicting. Right before summer hit was when the first session ended, and I took about seven weeks off from working out. I turned legal if that tells you anything.

So, right before this school year started I decided to drag myself back. I needed to kick it into high gear, seeing as how summer took a toll on my eating habits and beer gut. Eight weeks of bootcamp, five days a week. Riiiiight.

I'm writing this in my sweaty sports bra actually because I took a break from writing and went to one of the classes. Kickboxing was on tonight’s menu! This is, believe it or not, my third round of doing the bootcamp, and I still hover over my knees and pant like it’s my first time. The feeling of being pushed to your limit and feeling like you honestly can’t bear another second, but somehow manage to throw one more punch, or do one more squat is the best feeling. I promise you. Just don’t ask me how I manage to get up the next day and do it again.

I’ll be completely honest; the biggest struggle for me isn't working out, it’s the eating portion. Basically right now, I’m working out to maintain what I have. So therefore I can have my moments of weakness and not be too worried. I question if that’s me taking the easy way out though, and since I have to ask myself, I’m assuming that’s my answer.

Today I was on iVillage and found an article about why even the “lose 1-lb a week” diets don’t work. The hilarious thing is I just recently downloaded an app where you can choose how much you want to lose by counting calories, and I chose 1-lb a week. I literally logged what I ate for 1.5 days. Epic fail. IT’S THE DAMN WEEKEND I’M TELLIN’ YOU! On a side note, the app is MyFitnessPal and if you have self control I highly recommend it.

The very last paragraph is what spoke to me the most. I’m almost thinking about printing it off and taping it to my mirror.

I figured out there really is no need to obsess with weight loss and food. I’ve discovered from experience that by depriving myself of want I really wanted, only made me go out of control on the weekends. Which obviously isn’t rocket science, but sometimes you need to be reminded.

I do however; highly recommend the gym I attend. Scape is more of an intimate setting, vs. most gyms you see these days are jam packed with people. You have the option of one on one personal training sessions, or participating in the bootcamp. Even though the bootcamp is done in groups, the number is small and you still get personal help.

The phrase “group workout,” usually doesn’t appeal to people, but truth be told…nobody is looking at you. Unless they’re checking you out. Otherwise, they really aren’t concerned with how much you’re panting or how little you’re lifting.

The last thing I want is for this to sound like an advertisement, but you will feel better about yourself.

Also on ivillage, I stumbled upon an article reviewing the movie American the Beautiful and America the Beautiful 2: The Thin Commandments. Focusing on the always wanted, never attainable skinny model waistline, and why the average, beautiful woman should be looked at as exactly that. Beautiful. I have yet to see either flick, but I have my Hulu up and ready with part one.

TOP THREE: My Common Scents

I think my love of candles, perfume and similarly scented items came with both age and maturity. A decade ago, a list of my favorite smells on earth would have contained fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies, Bath & Body Works' Cucumber Melon body lotion, and the $5 cinnamon apple candle my mom burned during the holidays.

While I still love these nostalgic fragrances (although they recently discontinued Cucumber Melon at Bath & Body Works), I've grown quite fond of more sophisticated scents. I've already mentioned my favorite Bond perfumes, but I've come to love filling my home with luxurious candles and sweet-smelling diffusers just as much. Below, find my three most-utilized candles.

1.) Diptyque Violette , $65.00

I would have been the first person to tell you that there was no way I was ever going to spend $65 on a candle, but this was long before my nose knew about the existence of Diptyque's Violette.

When I first started at the Troc, I made sure to research the store's products thoroughly, which included smelling every scent that made its way onto our shelves. Since then, not a work day goes by that I don't close my eyes and inhale this unbelievable floral fragrance (available at Trocadero). The subtle, sweet scent of violets is completely irresistible -I only wish that it came in a room spray so I could wear it on a day-to-day basis.

2.) Voluspa Vervaine Olive Leaf, $18.00

I came home a few weeks ago to find my new roommate burning this Voluspa Vervaine Olive Leaf candle, and I was immediately hooked. Something about the combination of apricot and coconut wax with lemon verbena and crushed olive leaf combines to form a perfectly complex candle that is fruity yet sultry. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the Voluspa tins are so delightfully decorated!

3.) Slatkin & Co. Frosted Cupcake, $19.50

Okay, so perhaps my "sophisticated scents" theory should be revisited - but if you haven't experienced the sweet-smelling glory that lies in this candle, then I suggest you make your way to the nearest Bath and Body Works and pick up as many as possible. It's exactly what it sounds like - a delectable fragrance that manages to mix cake batter and buttercream frosting without being overwhelmingly sweet. These readily available candles often go on sale for 2 for $20, so I'd suggest you wait if possible and purchase them at a discount.

Le Freak c'est Magnifique!

Does the song "Let's Dance" by David Bowie make you want to hit the dance floor immediately? Or are you more into 70s disco pop like "Good Times" by the band Chic? Perhaps you're like me and listened to Duran Duran's "The Reflex" over and over again and taped it when it was on Friday Night Videos? If you answered "yes" to any or all of these questions, then you're a big fan of Nile Rodgers' work, the music producer on all three songs (and member of the band for the second).

Nile Rodgers has produced some of the most recognizable songs from the 70s and 80s including "We Are Family," by Sister Sledge, "Like a Virgin," by Madonna, "Original Sin," by INXS, "Love Shack," by the B-52s and "Notorious" by Duran Duran.

When I read that he had written Le Freak, a very colorful memoir filled with stories from his chaotic and unsupervised youth to his days as a multi-platinum recording music producer, I knew I needed to download it immediately onto my Kindle for iPad. Le Freak is as enjoyable and addictive to read just like his music. If you're looking for a great page-turner, this is the book for you. What a fantastic holiday present for anyone who grew up in the 70s or 80s.

Coincidentally, I love that Duran Duran has just issued a new video for their song "Girl Panic" that is so retro-80s. It kind of has a Nile Rodgers feel to it. What do you think?

Sopa de Ajo

While traveling abroad this past summer, I had the opportunity to taste lots of tasty dishes, one of which was this amazingly delicious and simple Spanish soup, sopa de ajo. As the weather grows increasingly colder here in Omaha, my boyfriend and I have been making this soup quite often as we almost always have all of the ingredients on hand and a hot dinner is on the table in under an hour. Also, the immune-stimulating properties in garlic make this my go-to dish when I'm feeling under the weather. Here's my recipe:

(Serves 2)

Ingredients:
olive oil

2-3 bulbs of garlic (dependent on your personal preference; for me it typically depends on how much I have on hand)

1/2 of a baguette cut into 1/2" slices (the Spaniards typically make this soup to get rid of stale bread; if you have some on hand, throw it in! If not, toast the bread in the oven for a bit until golden brown)

2 tsp of pimenton (Spanish smoked paprika - this spice is essential, as normal paprika will not taste the same. Again, if you would like to add more of this spice to your soup, be my guest)

dash of cumin

2-3 cups of vegetable or chicken broth

4 eggs

salt and black pepper to taste (be careful not to over salt -- most broths have more than enough. With that said, this is a saltier soup!)

1. Saute garlic until soft but not brown, about three minutes.
2. Add the broth, pimenton, cumin, salt & pepper and bring to a boil.
3. Reduce heat to a simmer, add the bread & push around to make four wells in the soup to hold the eggs. Break an egg into each well and use a spoon to scoop hot soup over each egg until the eggs are cooked to your preference.

Should Project Accessory Hang Up Its Hat?

I've just watched two back-to-back episodes of Project Accessory...Are any of you guys watching it? Because I'd love to know what you think. Because my 10 year old 5th grader viewing partner and I keep likening it to a train wreck. You know you gotta rethink when even a 10 year old (who loves and breathes fashion) doesn't like it.

We actually both just started to watch the latest season of Project Runway together on Lifetime. I had seen prior seasons when it was on Bravo but then missed probably the past few years worth, both when it was on Bravo and when it debuted on Lifetime. We really had a great time watching this last season of P.R. with Anya and the gang. At the beginning of the season, we'd even sketch alongside the contestants and create our own looks. It was the perfect before-bed ritual on Monday nights (courtesy of the DVR).

When we saw ads for Project Accessory, we were kinda doubtful off the bat. For some reason the ads with INXS's "The Devil Inside" just didn't provoke in the right way. And you're talking to an ex-accessories director...of In Style no less! After I heard that In Style was going to be the magazine connection (like Elle was and now Marie Claire is for P.R.), I definitely knew I'd have to watch just to see Ariel Foxman, the current editor of In Style (he wasn't while I was working there though he and I did work together at In Style when he was an associate editor and then a senior editor). And of course the guest judges (let me guess, perhaps Brian Atwood will be one?).

There are a whole lot of things that just don't work on this accessory rendition of P.R. First of all, the medium just screams crafty-Holly Hobby. When on the first episode they had to go through and scavenge through a storage unit in New Jersey and people were fashioning things out of lamp shades, springs on a mattress and ice skates....well, I just kind of cringed. To have accessories as a back drop to 1. Jeans and a white t-shirt, 2. A black dress, and 3. A bodysuit: it's just way too gimmicky. And it's so difficult to see the accessories on the runway (especially when they have that God awful Project Accessory logo thing in the bottom right hand corner which blocks seeing the close up shots of the accessories!!!). The producers really need to rethink the branding of the show that covers up the shots of the accessories. Really? Has no one seen or commented or tweaked this yet?

And the "foursome" just isn't the same. Really. Not. The. Same. Molly Sims just shows you how simply radiant, natural, gorgeous, personable and charismatic Heidi Klum is. I have met Heidi on numerous occasions and she is all that and a bag of chips. And I love that is translates so well on TV...she really has great television presence. And every week we used to comment on how beautiful she looked in her different outfits, her various hairstyles, her radiant makeup. Every week she was polished and sophisticated and looked terrific. And then there's Molly. Oh, no she didn't. Who is styling her? More importantly, who is styling Heidi and can Lifetime get Molly some of that? She is also stiff as a board and does not offer anything constructive. I am at a loss for words. (Or not, clearly, as I've just gone on and on about her.)

I LOVE vivre.com and Eva JeanBart-Lorenzotti is a true pioneer and genius in the internet, luxury goods business. But I don't think she translates well on TV. She seems a little stiff...well, her hair is definitely hair sprayed to an awkward stiffness. I want to root for her on this show but every time she walks in the work room, I feel like she is sauntering seductively and it just seems off. She is definitely not warm and cuddly like Tim Gunn (who, to Eva's credit, also at the beginning of the series seemed a bit stiff himself). I don't know about her as a mentor...I actually think the guest judge of Nadja Swarovski was very good...maybe a thought for future seasons (if there are any?).

Kenneth Cole isn't Michael Kors. If it was me, I would have put Richard Sinnott, the head of accessories for Michael Kors in that role. Yeah, maybe they need a bona fide accessories designer but I think Richard would be hilarious and very knowledgable as he's worked both as an accessories editor and now at a fashion house running accessories.

The best judge hands down is Ariel. He makes the show worth watching just for his one liners. His Xanadu comment, his quick, "Ok, you can design," or whatever he says very matter-of-factly to the designers. I wondered whether he would be able to convey constructive criticism as he hasn't spent that many years studying the accessories market as a Fashion Director or Accessories Director does. But then I realized that you really don't need the fashion knowledge background to be able to know what's ok and what's crap going down the Project Accessory runway! I think it's safe to say that most people watching from their couches can figure that out.

Like this "Aspen snow bunny" outfit whose designer was booted from the competition last week. Though I really tend to scratch my head when Kelly Osbourne and the rest of the gang thought the winning look (all black with turban) was "sophisticated" and that you could see all ages wearing that look. What? I was not a fan. Frankly, it's just hard to take the show seriously when they ask the "designers" to create looks for a bodysuit? This is not constructive. This is like amateur hour.

Anyone else feeling the same as me? Or am I being too highly critical? Is it worth blocking space on my DVR or should I leave more space for HGTV's House Hunters? Seems like I'm not the only one who is questioning watching...in NY Magazine, they asked, "Did You Give Project Accessory a Second Shot Last Night?"

Adventures in Chicken Pt. 1

I have always had an obsession with roast chicken. I don't know if it's the cute, newborn-like appearance of a young chicken or the warm, Americana comfort food appeal of a roast chicken dinner, but it has been on my list of meals to perfect for a while now. This past week I finally embarked on my recent planned attempt at it. At the grocery store that day I gathered up some basic roasting items: lemon, thyme, rosemary, garlic, red potatoes, carrots, and celery and LOTs of butter!

I wasn't actually planning to follow a recipe, as I had basic knowledge of cooking a chicken as well as countless tips and methods gathered from years of watching the Food Network and reading magazines and cookbooks. Plus, I always just cook with my gut and nose! I did, however, stumble upon a recipe from The Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten that was similar to what I had planned on doing, so I used it for reassurance.

After a long day of running errands, I didn't get home until 8, which meant a VERY late dinner. But I was determined. So, off I went chopping vegetables, rinsing and seasoning the chicken. My biggest concern was achieving rich flavor and a crisp, golden skin. I decided to use a trick I picked up a while back of using an herb butter mixture to slather under the skin and on top, to ensure both rich flavor and a buttery crisp skin.

I stuffed the cavity with a half of the lemon, a bunch of thyme and a few sprigs of rosemary, a chunk of onion, a few garlic cloves and ...of course, a hunk of butter (is this starting to sound like a Paula Dean recipe?). I tied up the legs (with some decorative gold floral wire, since I didn't have any kitchen string), placed the cute little bird on top of the seasoned vegetables in my ceramic baking dish, and in the preheated oven it went for about an hour and a half. After letting the chicken rest, dinner was served at about 11:30. A very late dinner indeed!

The results: a moist chicken with good flavor and a gorgeous crisp skin! And the vegetables, soft and buttery and fresh with lemon and herbs yet still retaining some of their crispness and natural flavor.

Fashion For and By the Masses

What do you think of fashion bloggers? Are you inspired by them or do you find them revolting? Do you think fashion should be left to the "experts" of the magazine or retail world or should bloggers dictate what's coming down the pike?

I definitely have mixed feelings about the subject. I think about the "credentials" of these bloggers -- who are they? What have they contributed to the world of fashion that makes them a credible source? Why should I listen to them? Why should I care?

But then I really think about who the "credible" fashion journalists are and why they are the ones who get to dictate trends and tell us what's in and what's out. Is there some pedigree of knowledge that these "journalists" have that the bloggers don't? Looking inward, what special "degree" did I have that allowed me to be at the fore front of fashion for so many years?

I'm glad I left the "regulated" fashion industry when I did. I'm not sure if I'd be super annoyed by these bloggers being at every fashion show, every industry event, being touted as "icons" of the style world. It sounds quite curmudgeonly of me, I know. Would it be jealousy? Perhaps. Or is it more about "let us do our jobs and you go back to what you do...and what is it again that you do for a living?"

I think, plain and simple, that there are some great master marketers out there in the blogosphere. Some have style, some don't. Some are great writers, some aren't. Some are legitimate, some are poseurs. And it's up to each person to decide whether you want to spend time on their site(s).

Which brings me to my subject which made me think about all this. Rumi Neely. She is a slender, pretty part-Asian style blogger who started Fashion Toast a few years ago. Now it is part of a larger blog called NowManifest which incorporates the more popular individual blogs of a few folks onto one shiny site.

I am not a style blogger follower. I just logged onto Fashion Toast for the first time a couple days ago. I had never heard of this Rumi person but quickly learned about her by looking through her blogs and reading up on her background. The thing I was drawn to was just how these fashion bloggers create such "editorialized" shoots of themselves. It's rather conceited, no? But it sure does work. And boy, what I love is how she markets it all. I'm impressed that she sells the clothes she has worn on her ShopToast site (such as the Topshop harness blazer pictured above). Or how about these Chloe Sevigny-Opening Ceremony sandals pictured on the right. If you're a size 6.5/7.

So what do you think? Are style bloggers the wave of the future? Do we care what the magazines say anymore? I've got to admit, I know a lot of the real fashion editors out there and many have the style quotient of a....how do I say this nicely....

Easy as 1-2-3

I'm all about the sweets. Snack worthy, easy, pop one in your mouth after dinner treats. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to whip up a buttercream frosted cake, or a made from scratch cherry pie, (which I have done ONCE, believe it or not) but, it's time consuming and I'm not Betty Crocker. Nor would I want to be...I don't think.

So let me present to you perhaps one of the easiest things you may ever make.

Here is the extremely long list of ingredients you will need:

Waffle pretzels

Rolo's

Pecans

Sounds awful doesn't it?

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees

2. Grab a baking sheet and line it with waxed paper for easy clean up

3. Line the pretzels up on the baking sheet

4. Place one Rolo on top of each pretzel

5. Toss the pan in the oven for roughly 4 minutes, enough to soften, but not enough to melt!

6. Lastly, press a pecan down over the Rolo and you're golden!

I personally enjoy the melty goodness directly off the pan, but you of course have the option to let them set up for a bit in the fridge. Whatever your little chocolate loving heart desires.

Trend: How to Wear Printed Pants

I adore how prints can just amp up your look without really trying. I'm also a huge fan of print on print but I have been eyeballing these printed pajama style pants popping up all over the place and wondering how they can look good on the average person and not just a super model. So I practiced styling some and wanted to share examples of the best ways to wear them for different body types.

There are three main types of the printed pant that's hot now, the tried and true legging style, retro wide leg style and then the trickier harem style pant that is baggy at the top and tends to accentuate the hips and butt area that most people do not want to show off particularly.

Harem Pant: Best on slim to willowy body types.

Printed leggings (of the knit or jean variety): best on slim, average to pear shaped body types

How to style: use the print as a pop of color and interest peeking out from below a drapey tunic or flattering dress. They will accent the slimmest part of your legs at the calf. You can also have some fun with prints and layer a print skirt over leggings. For chilly weather pair with a chunky cardigan like this Missoni one, it's okay to have more bulk on the top if the legs are slim! Ooh La La! Chocolate Croissants to Die For

Yesterday I decided to make pancakes for breakfast as I had a little extra time in the morning. With baby Annabel starting to try finger foods (in the form of halved Cheerios), it frees me up to work in the kitchen for about 15 minutes before I have to sit down with her and spoon feed her usual oatmeal with pureed fruit. Breakfast was a hit and I went on with my day, later making homemade (and delicious) "Momofuku compost cookies" that afternoon.

Being single for so long...well, I didn't really spend so much time in the kitchen. I certainly didn't make cookies (I wasn't about to eat dozens of cookies myself!) and I never made pancakes for breakfast, that's for sure!

I find cooking and baking really creative and I rarely follow a recipe verbatim. I usually like to use it as a guide and then add my own take on ingredients. I often use Mark Bittman's book How To Cook Everything. It really is the one and only cookbook you need on your shelf. I love cookbooks but I find that I've pretty much stopped looking at any of them and only pull out the Bittman book.

But this morning, I kind of cheated. I love pain au chocolat, otherwise known as chocolate croissants! And the other day I was at Trader Joe's and saw these frozen packaged ones. For $3.99, you got 4 of them (a deal when you think at a bakery they charge anywhere from $2.50 and up). But I wondered how they would taste. I was pretty pleased with most things from Trader Joe's so I wasn't thinking that these would be far off.

I WAS BLOWN AWAY.

First of all, these Trader Joe's pain au chocolats need to be prepared 9 hours in advance. Yes, NINE HOURS. Or basically the night before. They are tiny little dough packages that you place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet that you leave overnight. They expand at room temperature (seriously they get huge!) and by the time you wake up, you see a four times as large dough mass -- times 4!

I decided to put an egg wash on the top of them to give them that authentic, glossy top finish. Then off they went into the oven at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

I've eaten some amazing pain au chocolats in my lifetime and I must say that these Trader Joe FROZEN(!!) ones are some of the best I've ever had. Seriously people, they were flaky, buttery, crispy, chocolatey goodness that a chocolate croissant should be. For a buck each, I won't be getting chocolate croissants anywhere else in Omaha! I just want to have a brunch at my house so I can whip up a bunch of these to serve friends. They'll think they died and went to a patisserie in St. Germain de Prés!

Looks like I'm not alone. One google search of "Trader Joe's chocolate croissants" yielded pages upon pages of people singing these confections' praises, including this one. I'm starting to think I might have to stock up the next time I'm there...which makes me think: Should I really be sharing this information?

Can't Live Without: Catherine Malandrino for Repetto ballet flat

Do you have something in your closet that is your absolute "go-to" item? You know, something that is comfortable, suitable for any occasion, a cinch to throw on and go out the door. Have you parted with something else in your closet that just was worn down, ripped, permanently stained or doesn't fit anymore?

I've noticed that in a closet full of clothes and shoes, I have my favorites that I truly cannot live without them. Ok, yes, I could live without them but let's face it, I really would be pretty bummed if I didn't have them.

The other day when I was slipping on my shoes, I thought: "Seriously, these are the most comfortable shoes I own. I don't know what I would do without them!"

This inspired me to start an ongoing series called: "Can't Live Without" and it will highlight certain items in my wardrobe that have proven to be indispensable (and sadly, many are irreplaceable).

My first Can't Live Without items are my limited edition Catherine Malandrino designed Repetto bolshoi ballet flat. I cannot tell you how many pairs of shoes landed in my offices at In Style. Because I was a sample size 6.5/7 (37), there was never a shortage of shoes, boots, slippers, sneakers and the like. Often times designers would even send me the "never produced" samples -- these were the prototype designs that were shown to buyers and never got enough orders so they were never made. Yes, I own multiple "one of a kind" shoes but these were put into production (from what I remember). These ballet flats were designed by Catherine Malandrino and had this wonderful distressed star pattern in white on gray (I wrote lovingly about them in a past Troc Talk series called Two For The Road). I love the square toed Repetto "bolshoi" style instead of the more traditional pointed versions. This pair of shoes are so worn in that I really don't know what I'm going to do when they finally "die." I'll be sure to take them to Sam DiMauro at Andy's Shoe Repair (he's the genius shoemaker in Omaha that we've written about that works miracles on all shoes) and see if he can work his magic. Otherwise, I will have to settle for regular Repetto bolshoi ballet flats (but even here, they're sold out and not available in my size!).

So you might ask why I don't stock Repetto ballet flats at the Troc? I wrote up an order a couple years ago but realized that it's a price point that doesn't work well here in Omaha. Believe me, of all the 200+ shoes in my closet, these Repetto ballet flats are the ones I wear the most of all. I would gladly pay retail to purchase another pair when these beloved beauties finally bite the dust. But hopefully, as mentioned before, our guy Sam can do his thing and get me another few years!

Female Rap Star from Nebraska?

I'm known amongst my friends for my uncanny ability to find random yet fascinating YouTube videos. Despite the fact that I'm well-versed in the land of viral videos, even I was blown away by the musical duo Karmin, a now-engaged couple whose top 40 covers quite literally leave my jaw on the floor.

This is mostly due in part to singer Amy Heidemann's unbelievable rapping abilities, which make hit songs by Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne look easy. Even more astonishing is the fact that she grew up in Seward, Nebraska, a little town with a population of around 7000 that lies about an hour west of Omaha.

Together with her fiance, Nick Noonan, Amy has captured the attention of everyone from Ryan Seacrest to Ellen DeGeneres, ultimately winding up as the soundtrack to NBA commercials and even signing a deal with Epic Records.

For your viewing pleasure, I give you the video that first captured the world's attention - and with 44 million views, it's hard to argue with their talent.

Karmin released their first official single, "Crash Your Party," a just a couple of weeks ago. While I have to say that their abilities have definitely been edited and made "radio-friendly" in this track, I can't wait to see what else they have coming down the pipeline. I particularly like the video below, where they hear their song for the first time on the radio - it's their humility and true passion that makes them so endearing!

Gifts That Give Back

One of the hugest perks about being a fashion editor in New York was all the presents we used to get! Not only during Christmas but also just throughout the year. A most favorite annual gift were the hand painted and embroidered pillows from Manolo Blahnik. I love that they're very limited edition and dated for each holiday year. It looks like I received 6 in total (there is one not pictured that has a green background and is sitting on a chair) and I cherish each one. As you may be able to see, the one of the far right has American flags on it; this one was 2001, the first Christmas after 9/11. On the side of the pillow is written: U.S.A. We Love You.

I love how the small square pillow looks like Annabel is wearing her first pair of Manolo Blahniks! Perhaps I should try to shoot that photo again with the pillow sitting lower towards her feet!

Creating a wonderful backdrop to the pillows on the back of our couch is a wonderful Sari Bari blanket that was a gift from our dear friends C+P. What is Sari Bari? It's an amazing charitable organization that restores the lives of women and children who have been rescued from the sex trade in India. Each blanket is handmade from vintage saris by these women and children so that they can lead a life off the streets and have a safe, place of employment.

Who knew that the Manolo Blahnik's Christmas pillows would set the stage for this Sari Bari blanket and inspire some holiday gift giving? As I snapped away at Annabel, I realized that the perfect Christmas gifts would be anything from the Sari Bari site! They have all sorts of items from jewelry rolls to baby changing mats, handbags to scarves and of course these great throws. The Big Bang Belt

Yesterday on my personal blog Postcards From Omaha, I wrote about how I was in need of some new clothes and ended up purchasing almost a dozen pieces at Ann Taylor. Yes, that Ann Taylor. I am surprised by how many great staple pieces I bought both this past weekend as well as another trip I made there fairly recently. On my blog I spoke about how I'm a good editor: how I can spot the good items from the bad (read: dowdy, corporate 80s looks that Ann Taylor kind of has the bad reputation for) and quickly edit through a whole store's merchandise. But what I forgot to mention is that once you have these key pieces, it's all about the styling.

When I opened Trocadero, I wanted to concentrate on all my favorite things. Those included accessories, shoes and gifts. And within the category of accessories, I really focused mainly on handbags, jewelry and some scarves. Some people have wandered in the shop looking for belts. We don't sell belts. And there's a reason: I don't really like them. I am not a fan of wide, garish belts with buckle ornamentation. I don't like the belt as "a trend." If anything, I like belts very sparingly. And perhaps that's why I like vintage belts and not so much new ones that are "new to the scene."

On one recent shopping excursion to Ann Taylor, I happened to purchase this top to the left. It didn't seem to be very popular as many sizes were still available and it was on sale like 4 times. I think it was "take an additional 50% off the sale price" sort of thing. I think I might have paid between $25-$35 for this top (originally $88). I liked the gray neutral of the top with the daytime shimmer of matte sequins in a bronzy gold.

I also happened to snag a great gold lurex cardigan from the super sale racks and thought it would pair nicely with the gray top.

I'm still a bit top heavy to date and my waist line has seen slimmer days so with those two in combination, I I find that most shirts fall on me in an unflattering boxy way. Add the cardigan and it just looked really flat and boxy.

Lo and behold, what did I learn? I discovered that the one accessory that would really put the whole look together was a skinny belt! And thankfully for me, Ann Taylor had one in a great gold lizard. I couldn't have picked out a better match for what I needed.

I still don't think I'll be stocking belts anytime soon at the Troc. Instead I recommend you head over to Ann Taylor and check out their wide assortment of skinny belts. This is one item that you'll want to own in different colors and it's just the right accessory to create a waistline and break up a head-to-toe color look.

When life gives you ( a lot of ) apples...

While I love going to the pumpkin patch as much as the next person, the one fall festivity I absolutely cannot forgo is a trip to the apple orchard. This fall I brought home a very large bag of apples, and after my family and I had eaten our fair share of them, we were still left with quite an abundance. What to do? Apple crisp is usually our go-to dish, but this fall I wanted to make something different. When I stumbled upon this Apple Spice Cake recipe, I knew this was it. This recipe is great for entertaining, especially during the season when family and guests are in town, as the cream cheese allows the cake to be stored for quite some time without drying out. It's also great paired with coffee for an afternoon snack or an after dinner dessert.

Ingredients:
Cake:
1 3/4 c flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 lbs of cooking apples
1/3 c brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp cardamom
2 tsp cinnamon
8 tbs unsalted butter
8 ounces of cream cheese (full or low-fat)
1 1/2 c granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 large eggs
Glaze:
3/4 c confectioners' sugar
3 tbs sweetened condensed milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
cinnamon to taste
For the Cake:
Preheat the oven to 350º F. Spray a 9-inch round springform pan with non-stick baking spray.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Peel, core & chop the apples into thin 1 inch slices. In another bowl, toss the apples with the brown sugar, cardamom, and cinnamon. (I threw in a dash of nutmeg & cloves too*) Set aside.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter, cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. (A handheld mixer will work fine too) Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat again. Add the flour in 3 additions and beat until smooth.
Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the apple mixture just until evenly distributed; do not over mix. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, 60-70 minutes. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool for 5 minutes.
For the Glaze:In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioners' sugar, warmed sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon and vanilla until smooth and pourable adding more milk if needed.
Remove the sides of the springform pan and place the cake on a wire rack set over a piece of waxed paper to catch drips. While the cake is still warm, drizzle with the glaze.

Well folks, here it is...the moment you've all been waiting for. Okay, if not you, then definitely me. Alas, I found a place to get a spray tan at a decent cost and I don't look like I walked out of the J-shore.

For those of you who read our blog, I posted one back in the summer about how important it is to stay away from tanning beds, and how anyone can rock the so called "pale" look. Well, as some of you know, since I watched that video, I haven't tanned in a tanning bed. :) I actually feel super accomplished even though it may come off a tad on the weird side to some. I like being able to set an example for all my tanning bed going friends. Hopefully they can eventually catch on to me guilt tripping them!

It's been about three months for me, (since the summer provided with me a smidge of color, OF COURSE, while wearing sunblock) where I've been my natural color, and I can honestly say I don't hate it. I'm starting to embrace it and it feels soooo gooood!

So here's the 411, I bought a Groupon ($25 for 2 spray tans) for Shine Day Spa because I had been told a couple of times that it was the place to go. I thought, eh, what the heck, the only thing that could go wrong is that I wasted 25 bucks and I come out looking orange.

I decided to save the Groupon so I could have a little glow for Halloween weekend of course (a tad risky for a first timer I know,) but I made sure to call ahead to schedule an appointment. Another bonus might I add. The gal was super friendly over the phone and gave me advice on when to schedule my appointment depending on when I was planning on going out.

Fast forwarding to my appointment...she took me back to a room and told me to take off basically whatever I didn't want a tan line from and that she would check back. I put on my fashionable hair cap and was ready to go! She came back a few minutes later and before I knew it I was a light bronzed beauty.

The thing that set Shine apart from just another spray tanning booth is that because someone is actually doing the spraying for you, there is less of a chance of streaking and not getting all of you colored. They tell you to do different poses and flip your hands a certain way so that you don't have to worry about it looking funky when you're done! I remember a slight warrior yoga pose for all you yoga experts out there.

Not to mention you choose the level of color you want. She recommend the lightest, and told me it would give me slight color and a bit of a glow. It turned out perfect and I was extremely pleased.

Now for those of you who were not lucky enough to catch the Groupon, a single full body spray tan starts at $28, and will last about a week. Totally worth it.

Just a side tip for newbies: before you spray tan, always use a body scrub and keep your skin free of lotion to ensure the best possible look.

Changing Colors

One of my favorite parts of Autumn is the changing colors of the leaves, but I much prefer the changing shades of hair color this time of year. Fall is the time to update your look. Whether it be the simmering crimson route or that of sultry chocolate, the season offers endless possibilities. I spoke with my friend Sarah Pithan, National Educator with Primary Syn, about her thoughts on the season's hottest color trends.

"Fall always reminds me of spices. Nutmeg, curry, cinnamon," Pithan said. "Fall hair colors should be spicy and rich, warm and solid."

For a bold look, try a fiery paprika red like Christina Hendricks (above) or if you're not quite ready for that big of a jump, try a subtler cinnamon shade like Drew Barrymore (left) instead.

As the weather cools into winter hair tones tend to as well, Pithan added. "You'll still have daring bright golden blondes and fiery redheads in the bunch," she said. "It's about sticking out in the winter and having fun in the yuck of the gloom."

Color blocking (whole sections of hair breaking up allover looks) is also very hot, Pithan said. "There will be lots of mixing cool and warm tones next to each other for contrast and movement."

Pithan recommends color blocking with triangular sections where you want to attract attention or add movement. Above one ear, on one side of the nape, a whole side with just a veil of the allover color everywhere else. "It can be darker, lighter, just a different tone or a fun, funky color. It can just peek out from one side or when parted different can add a huge section that screams fun!" Pithan said.

A True Gem in the heart of Omaha

I can't believe it's taken me a year to blog about this, but I guess better late than never! Last November as I was organizing my old house, I came across some of my jewelry that needed some work. Two of the pieces were Chanel costume pieces that were missing stones. The first is pictured above. One of the circle amber stones is missing from this otherwise perfect chunky "brooch" style necklace. I first thought to go to some bead stores. So off I went to a few places all over Omaha. But none of these stores offered anything even remotely close to what I needed.

I had another necklace that had a broken chain and was able to be fixed on-the-spot by a nice young woman at Mangelson's. I showed her my Chanel necklace and asked her if they had any loose stones that were close to a match. They didn't. But she tipped me off to a place that is now my favorite go-to place for all my custom jewelry repairs. Coincidentally, it's called Custom Gems and is located across from Mangelson's on 84th Street (8487 Frederick Street; 402-397-9606).

There is so much to say about Custom Gems. First off, they're awesome! It's the type of store that you could spend an hour searching through their plastic bins for stones. It's like a card catalogue system at the library. You tell them or show them what you're looking for and they go back and pull out a tray with a bunch of similar stones and you have to dig through to find the closest match.

They not only had a piece of amber that fit perfectly in my Chanel necklace, but the price of the stone and repair costs were unbelievably affordable. And they were all so nice and friendly. And fast.

I also had this Chanel brooch fixed. On the left, one of the baguette clear stones is missing and on the right, it is replaced with two smaller emerald cut stones side-by-side to fit the setting. Unfortunately they didn't have a perfect match for this, but as you can see, it's hard to notice.

I also took a pair of Vera Wang citrine drop earrings where the stone had become loose. Again, Custom Gems tightened it and if I recall, they didn't even charge me for it. Seriously, they're that nice!

I love how Mom and Pop the shop is and there is so much to see there. And to buy too. So the next time you're in need of some jewelry repair, go check out Custom Gems on 84th Street. You won't be disappointed!

Faux Fur Pas

When the cold sets in I begin to prepare my warm nest like a little squirrel. The image that comes to mind is looking out the window at the snowy landscape in front of a warm and cozy fire with a fuzzy blanket. Now, I think that the fur look can be done wrong, so very wrong but when I picture Audrey Hepburn's ski lodge look a la "Charade" movie with Cary Grant (1963) I just know that winter won't be so dreadful.

What better way to keep your head warm in style with a faux rabbit furry pill box hat, L'Agence faux fur bomber available at Barney's , the ever popular waterproof Ulu boots are the surest way to go to keep your feet the warm and dry. The look wouldn't be complete without a vixeny pair of cat eye glasses with UV protection.

So get those fires going and if it's going to snow let's make the most of it!

Fashionable Halloween Costumes That Aren't Overtly Sexy, For a Change

Every Halloween, I sigh at the idea of store-bought costumes for women. Mass-produced disguises seem to sex up even the most bland of themes, from slutty eskimos to skanky bumblebees. Rather than participate in a parade of inappropriateness (and deal with any feelings of self-conciousness!), I prefer using Halloween as an opportunity to channel fashion icons and moments in history in a more literal sense - I've sewn a homemade Bjork swan dress and sported the head-to-toe Breakfast at Tiffany's ensemble in years past.

This year I'll be participating in a group costume, but it hasn't stopped me from brainstorming on some individual ideas that may come in handy for last moment parties!

Jackie Kennedy: There just aren't enough occasions that allow you to sport a pillbox hat. Classy, fashionable, and super-comfortable...this costume idea, like Jackie's style, is timeless. Complete with the right wig and you'll be ready for anything!

Joan Jett: I'm not very "rock n' roll" by nature, so I love the idea of pulling on a pair of leather pants and channeling a totally different person for the evening. Choppy, dark hair and thick black eyeliner are not optional!

Carrie Bradshaw: If I wasn't going in a group of seven girls, I would jump on the opportunity to be the starring character of Sex and the City. The outfit ideas are endless, but if you purchase the Carrie necklace online and sport her signature frizzy blonde curls, it'd be easy to peg you as this fashion icon.

Cruella de Vil: I love the idea of modernizing this iconic character just a bit. Of course you'd need to purchase the dual-colored black and white wig online (or find some sort of creative hair solution), but accompany this costume with a vicious laugh and you're sure to have a good time.

Twiggy: This one is, of course, all about the eyes and long, bare legs. A little blonde wig would complete the look perfectly. And again - comfortable, fashionable and doesn't command the wrong kind of attention on Halloween night!

Caramel apple taste = yes!

Caramel apple eating process = no!

You'll be pleased to know I came across today on Family Circle a solution to the caramel apple eating process. Go mini or go home!

I decided to take the idea for a test spin since Halloween is right around the corner. I wonder how alcohol infused caramel apples would taste? Hmmm, something to think about for an upcoming Halloween party.

Basically here is what I used:

The one step that will stay the same is using the melon baller to scoop out your "mini apples." Other then that the rest is up to you!

I read a tip that said after you scoop out the apple, pat it dry with a paper towel, otherwise the caramel won't stick! (I read this after they were already gone, go figure.)

I went ahead and dipped the mini guys into the melted caramel, and after they had about 30 minutes to firm up in the fridge, I dipped them again into my melted peanut butter & chocolate mixture.

Next, I coated them with either crushed nuts or crushed graham crackers and let them firm up once again. Of course, when it comes to waiting around for something of this sort, my patience is slim. I let them sit a good hour in the fridge, but if you can stand it, leave them a smidge longer to ensure the coating doesn't get ruined.

Mixing it up

When it comes to clothing, I love to mix up patterns. So it isn't a big surprise that I love mixing patterns when it comes to furniture too. Recently we updated our family room and it was fun to take one item from one set and combine it with a piece that was totally "different but similar." The key is keeping it "all in the family" in terms of tones and textures. I love the vibrant and larger ikat/batik print contrasted with the pillow in the gray with white squiggle. And I especially like this off white/grayish chair with gray French words scribbled horizontally.

I love ikat and batik prints too. This chair in charcoal with an off white pattern is the last addition to our new family room set. It seems to be the chair we all want to sit in too. Maybe because it's the most cozy. I also like that it's the darkest piece in the room; easier to disguise spills and stains (it's easy with three children under 10 years of age!).

I may or may not have watched Laguna Beach and The Hills more often than I care to admit. Whether you're a fan or not, Lauren Conrad has certainly launched her reality show stardom into a multi-industry success story, with her own clothing line, four books and a whole host of endorsements.

Her latest venture, The Beauty Department, has definitely proven to be a favorite for me. The blog-site is a collaboration between Lauren, her hairstylist, Kristen Ess, and her makeup artist, Amy Nadine.

The incredibly well-designed website features tutorials, videos and inspiring images on all of my beauty obsessions, from nails to hair. The step-by-step hair guides in particular keep me coming back, with an easy-to-follow, printable layout that makes trying out complicated styles a breeze.

If you're stuck in a beauty rut or are just looking to mix up your morning routine, I'd highly suggest a scroll-through for some inspiration!

What I LOVE Now

When I was in Cape Cod this past summer, I was shopping along the Main Street in Chatham and popped into a little children's store called Frances Johnston. I immediately fell in love with all the children's toys and decorations that lined the walls, cupboards and crib. There were a few standouts and they all happened to be from a company called Maileg out of Denmark.

The funny thing is that I've always been obsessed with Danish products. You've heard of Danish modern furniture, right? Well, let's just say that the Danes know a thing-or-two about great design. When I opened Trocadero 4 years ago, I knew I wanted to stock some items from Denmark. I carried a line of hand made ceramics from Anne Black and some baby clothes from Holly's of Copenhagen. I loved that they had clean lines, were unique to Omaha and just weren't the usual offerings you'd find in a more commercial store.

So it wasn't a surprise that all thee items I picked up at Frances Johnston and oohed and ahhhed over were from a company based in Denmark.

I couldn't help but fall in love with the Hans Christian Andersen Princess and the Pea toy set. A wooden bed with 7 beautiful mattresses in 7 different fabrics, a bedspread, a pillow, a Princess and of course a tiny pea. It came with a small Princess and the Pea story book translated in three languages. I had to have it. We have a joke that our little baby is like Princess and the Pee because it seems as if she cries if there's even a drop of pee in her diaper.

I decided I couldn't live without this toy and so I purchased it knowing it would make a beautiful addition to the nursery as a decoration (for now) and a toy (for later). I love just looking at it on the shelf in baby Annabel's room.

The owner of the shop, Frances Johnston, told me that I should stock the brand too. She said they were great to work with and just wonderful products. It wasn't hard to convince me. So now as we're venturing into our 5th year of business, I'm happy to introduce some of my "new favorite things" (to steal a line from Oprah!). I'm obsessed with these Danish rattles for babies. My little Annabel has the Prince (every Princess needs her Prince, no?) and chews on his toes (they have pellets for teething). How romantic, right? The "Belles Amis" box has a ballerina, a toy soldier and a pirate among others. The box to the right is the Jungle Team and there are monkeys, giraffes and elephants. You really cannot go wrong with any of them and they make the perfect gift for any new mom-to-be or any baby or toddler.

I didn't order the Princess and the Pea set for the Troc. At just about $120, I thought it's a little too out-of-the-price-range for a shower gift or any practical mom's check list. My justification? Well......I was on vacation and could afford to be a little extravagant. :-)

A Day of Firsts

I consider myself pretty lucky when it comes to my personal accessories closet. Through the years I have amassed quite the vast collection of shoes, bags and jewelry. So when trends happen, I can dip into my drawers and shelves and pull out something that is "au courant." Such as these Manolo Blahnik high-heeled loafers. If you look at the September Teen Vogue page, you'll see that it's all the rage right now (once again). The story behind these babies is that I was working at Harper's Bazaar and most likely went home to celebrate my birthday over the long weekend in January. I presumably went to Neiman Marcus' Last Call Sale and saw these Manolo Blahnik brown tassel loafers and fell in love immediately. Even at the tender age of 26, I knew these were the bomb. I didn't own a pair of Manolos and I really, really wanted a pair. And they were $485, marked down to $290, and then marked down again to $165.

But the practical (Capricorn) side of me (and my hovering around $20K yearly salary) definitely gave me pause to purchase them. So off I went back to my tiny studio apartment on NYC's Upper East Side Manolo Blahnik-less. I was working at Harper's Bazaar at the time and didn't get the coveted invitations to the $100 Manolo Blahnik sample sales that are legendary (second to the Chanel and Louis Vuitton ones from years past!). But as I've learned and taught others, "Walk away and sleep on it. If you can't get the item out of your head, it's kind of meant to be."

It looks like it took me about two weeks to make the decision to place a phone order. Lucky for me, they were still in stock. Two funny things, though. The first? I have yet to wear these shoes. Yup, they're still brand spanking new. Fifteen years later, these beauties are fresh out of the box and still rocking in style.

The second funny thing? It looks like I purchased my first Manolo Blahniks on 1/31/96. An auspicious day that will always be known as a day of firsts, I suppose! (Daughter Annabel was born on January 31st of this year!)

Fall Nail Polish Faves

I'm a huge advocate of nail polish, as its one of the easiest and least expensive ways to have the latest trends literally at your fingertips. Now that fall is officially here, these are the five colors I'm reaching for in my ever-expanding collection.

Butter London Rosie Lee: This rose-tinted glitter polish has quickly become one of my staple shades. The subtle color is suitable for any time and any occasion, and Butter has one of the best glitter formulas I've ever used. It's absolutely packed with shimmer but is still easy to work with, and it doesn't chip for weeks with a good topcoat.

Essie Nice is Nice: This is from Essie's limited-edition spring French Affair collection, but you should still be able to find it on eBay and Amazon. Somehow I wound up with all the colors in this collection, but this one definitely comes out the favorite. Even though it's the last one I purchased, this happy-go-lucky lavender just brightens my day. Although fall is generally the season for darker shades, I think this color will remain in my regular rotation just for a bit of refreshment.

OPI Uh Oh Roll Down the Window: If you can get past the tasteless title, this military green nail polish is a must-have. As a redhead, I will sport a great olive green as often as I can, and this is no exception. I love using it as a neutral and pairing it with everything from neon to rich berry colors.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Recherche: This color actually came out in spring but is just impossible to pass up for fall. Trocadero is a longtime fan of Rescue Beauty Lounge nail polishes and this stunning shade reminds us all why. The smoky purple hue is rich and dramatic without looking too dark. Plus, as usual with many of RBL's formulas, you can get away with one coat and have an absolutely flawless manicure.

Sinful Colors Love Nails: These $1.99 polishes are my guilty pleasure whenever I go to a local drugstore. Though I hate the name of this one as well, I had been looking for an iridescent blue ever since I saw a friend sporting Sephora by OPI's Mermaid to Order, and this one does the job. It doesn't last more than a few days without chipping and it needs three coats to be opaque, but for the price it's hard to argue with it.

Bravo for Brian!

What can I say except that I am so proud of my friend, shoe designer extraordinaire, Brian Atwood! It seems like he's finally gotten all the recognition that has been deserved for some time now. I've known Brian since the late 90s and was one of the first editors to really support his line. It's amazing the (good) power that fashion editors hold in the world of commercial and critical success for designers. I love that good things are happening for so many that I knew "way back when" just when they were starting out or on the brink of "making it."

When I first opened the Troc, I stocked Brian Atwood shoes. Boy, were they lovely! Unfortunately, many Omahans did not know the brand and even worse, they definitely didn't want to pay the price for a designer they never heard of. Yeah, I could have stocked "household" brands (known because of a little show called Sex and the City) like Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin, but my store was all about stocking the hidden gems, the brands that are editor favorites that might not be on the beaten path quite yet. Some brands at the Troc have done wonderfully, others haven't fared so well.

In my fantasy world I would be thrilled to restock Brian Atwood. Unfortunately, as a retailer I need to know my "retail climate" and have realized that these red carpet beauties with the red carpet price tag just won't sell enough in conservative-minded Omaha.

But if I could foresee an uptick in the economy, I would definitely consider stocking Brian Atwood's new "B Brian Atwood" diffusion line, right now available on saks.com. I'm especially crazy about the Paramour ankle boot in two textures of burgundy with a stacked heel and exposed zipper. But for $450, I still don't know if my customer is willing to spend that type of money (I, of course, think it's totally worth it. I'm a huge believer in spending money for investment pieces/wardrobe staples.) This boot is timeless perfection.

Studly Sam

Over the weekend I took a stroll through the shoe department and a pair of sassy studded heels caught my eye. I immediately made a B-line for them and stood for a few seconds imagining how they would look upon my feet.

It was love at first sight, so I decided to try them on JUST for looks, since Sam Edelman isn't exactly in my budget at this point in time. Heartbreaking if I do say so myself. Needless to say, the fuchsia color studded heel was right up my alley, I didn't want to take them off. "Just call up your mother, tell her to combine Christmas, birthday and groundhogs day all in one," said the dark haired mustache salesman. Funny thing is, I had literally just got off the phone with my Grandpa saying I found a pair of sunglasses as an early Christmas present. If you're curious, this tactic of mine is still a work in progress. I sadly slipped the precious pups back into the box and handed them back to the just as sad salesman and walked away. A proud moment in my life where I didn't give into temptation!

Since then, I have have done my research and found other shoes, still with the stud factor, but minus the WOW cost.

Here are my top two picks, and I even found a little spunky flat!

Wardrobe Staples

It's been a few years that I've been searching for the perfect leather motorcycle jacket. Even before I was a fashion editor, I used to want items in my closet that didn't actually exist in the current marketplace. Chalk it up to an innate sense of what's to come? I just remember back in the early 90s when I moved to NYC and all I wanted was a pair of knee high zip up boots in a caramel brown leather with a slightly rounded toe that were like the ones I wore in the 70s. Needless to say, I couldn't find anyone who made any boots that were knee high. I'm not kidding. They just weren't available. Fast forward a few years and it seemed like everyone now made that silhouette and a knee high boot was not like trying to locate a needle in a haystack.

Well, it's been the same thing for this leather motorcycle jacket. I found a really great one in December of 2008 in San Francisco. It was even a really reasonable price and the store was willing to give me 20% off too. But I was cash poor and really couldn't justify spending the $350 on myself. Of course in retrospect I am upset that I did not take my own advice and just buy it on the spot. I know how it is. If you find the item you've been looking for, and it's not a fortune, grab it!

I remember contacting the store when I returned to do a phone order and they said they would have a manager call me back. Well, that never happened. And as I always say, follow up is soooo important! A lesson I learned far too well when a week later I called back and they said the jacket had been sold. ARGH!

I decided to contact the company of the jacket to see if they could locate one in another store, in another city, or even directly from them. No such luck.

Ever since that debacle, I've been in pursuit of the perfect leather jacket. I wouldn't say money is no object but I definitely learned my lesson and decided that I needed to have an open mind (and pockets) if and when I found the piece.

Two and a half years later with random searches at stores across the nation both in person and via online purchases, I finally found a reasonable version of what I've been in hot pursuit.

My Twenty8Twelve "Aldridge" leather motorcycle jacket was pre-ordered back in August with a delivery date of mid-October (per Nordstrom.com). To my surprise, it arrived on the last day of September. All I can say is that I acted like a little girl on Christmas morning. And that's not pretty on a 41 year old woman...

It's pretty darn close to "near" perfection. It ain't perfect. But it has a lot of what I wanted: a fold down collar (opposed to the many collarless versions I found), classic asymmetrical zippers, a longer/regular length (opposed to the many cropped styles), side zipper pockets. I would have liked zippers on the sleeves but instead I got two vertical zippers in the back (like vents) which actually provide some "let out" for wearing the jacket with something more bulky underneath (or in my case, providing more room for my continued top-heaviness from nursing!).

I paid towards the top end of what I wanted to spend but it didn't matter. I got what I wanted and now I can "be at peace" (haha) knowing that I finally have the jacket I've been looking for and can start wearing it all the time, especially with the weather starting to finally turn crisper.

Next up on my search for the perfect wardrobe staple? A champagne sequined shawl collar long cardigan in ivory. If you happen to find it, let me know.

Hold the Mimosa

Beer... for breakfast?
Some would consider touching the stuff before noon dreadfully alcoholic, while some, our European counterparts in particular, wouldn't consider it anything out of the ordinary. Recently, The Wall Street Journal featured an article suggesting a few beer pairings for your typical breakfast fare.

Curious and enticed by the unusual suggestions (a milky stout with your morning bowl of granola?), my boyfriend and I set off to try Rogue's Chipotle Ale, best paired with your classic bacon and eggs.

With or without breakfast, this beer has great flavor. With forty pounds of chipotle peppers in each batch, the ale lends to a crisp and smokey chile flavor. We decided to try it with a potato and seitan sausage hash, topped with a fried egg & a side of toast and salsa.
Here's our simple recipe:

-Sauté 1/2 an onion with several cloves of garlic
-Peel and cube a russet potato, toss into onion & garlic mixture, and cook until potatoes are soft yet crispy
-While cooking, season with spices to your liking. Beside salt & pepper, we added cumin, cinnamon, and smokey paprika to complement the chipotle ale. And to add a nice kick, we tossed in a jalapeno, but a serrano or poblano would work too.
-Top with a fried egg and enjoy!

The results? A match made in heaven. You can kiss your Bloody Marys goodbye

Missoni for Target: The Aftermath

Now that the customer-ignited fury of the Missoni for Target failure has finally died down a bit, I feel like it is safe to come out from under my zig-zag printed covers and talk about the collection...

I strolled into my neighborhood Target at approximately 10:30 AM on September 13, the day of the infamous launch. Reports of Target's site crash and vicious comments on their Facebook page had warned me of the Missoni wasteland I was about to walk in on - but, thankfully, Omahans apparently have little to no knowledge of these sorts of things, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a decently stocked store. The homewares and bedding sections had been completed raided, and most of the clothing was only available in an XL, but I was still able to walk out with the flats, a couple of trays, and a cosmetic bag without having to fend for my life.

On the West Coast, my aunt strolled into her local Target and snapped a picture of a plethora of Missoni bedding, which she promptly texted to me. Fast forward to a few days later, and my new favorite family member had sent me my coveted ribbon pillow AND a full Missoni for Target bedspread.

I am grateful that I was able to get my hands on these coveted items, but I know others weren't so lucky.

The MZ Wallace 'Vivienne,' or The Day I Declared My Undying Love for Tassels

Feast your eyes on the newest fall bag from MZ Wallace, the Vivienne in Night Storm ($365). Not only is this beauty made of soft, printed nylon and big enough to fit an iPad, but it features a footlong wine-colored tassel.

I have long been known in the shop for my inexplicable tassel addiction, which somehow finds its way onto every accessory I own. Bags, shoes, necklaces, earrings - if you can put a tassel on it, I'll purchase it. I own everything from a small Anya Hindmarch cosmetic bag with a tiny leather tassel to a silver pendant necklace with six of them in silk thread. It may stem from a larger affliction for fringe in general, but something about the ease and swing of a good tassel just seduces me every time.

Cozy Campfires and the Great Outdoors

I love fall! As it cools off and approaches this beloved season I start bringing out the cozy sweaters, boots and cute beanies while other people are hanging on to their shorts and tees as long as they can. I'm a bit of an outdoorsy style girl, relishing in my moccasins and blanket ponchos, a bit a la 70's hippie style (but with skinny jeans).

Hang on to your stripes! If I can extend and blend some of my summer wardrobe into fall all the better. Layering a striped tank under a fall print can give it a new flair! One good winter worthy pair of boots and you've got a lot of options. Pair tall boots with shorts and a sweater, over skinny jeans or leggings. I recommend a healthy selection of leg warmers to go over tights or the boots themselves for another look. A lighter scarf protects you from the chill and adds print. I encourage mixing and matching of prints, all the layers make it fun to get dressed.

In preparation for my upcoming trip to Mount Rushmore national monument, it will be my first real camping trip this year and I can't wait to pack! Fashion's Night Out at Trocadero!

Although the big-time events for Fashion's Night Out 2011 were no doubt housed in New York City, we decided to share the spirit of this retail celebration with the people of Omaha last Thursday. The Troc celebrated with a DJ, delicious appetizers, free makeovers, great sales and plenty of sangria!

Seared ahi tuna and black bean tostadas from Stokes Grill and Bar proved to be popular among Troc guests!

As August comes to a close, I'm beginning to turn my attention away from silk shorts and floaty dresses and focus it on the upcoming fall trends. Spurred on by the latest September issues of my favorite magazines, I'm ready to saturate my wardrobe with a season full of color!

One of the easiest ways to inject the best and the brightest of autumn's go-to hues is with colored denim. It can seem a bit daunting at first to pick up a pair of cherry-red jeans, but once you open up to it the possibilities are essentially endless, with a shade for every style.

Colored denim is an effortless purchase if you're planning on engaging in color-blocking this fall, the artful mix of two or more solid colors in an ensemble. Knock out two trends in one and invest in a pair - they'll still be relevant with more classic items in years to come. New Obsession

I love looking for and finding new designers to look to for inspiration. Rachel Zoe, fashion stylist to the stars, recently launched her new line, Rachel Zoe Collection, and I now have a new obsession. If I want to act on this new obsession, I will either need to find a new job or marry a doctor. That being said, the clothes in her collection are a little out of my price range, but the beauty and elegance of the line makes you almost forget about the tags and just splurge! Here are some of my favorites from the new collection:

I love the tailored look of these pieces. They look chic, professional and have great detailing.

I wish I could have sequins or glitter on everything I own! These pieces are great for going out with the girls! For a less flashy look, dress them down by just adding a blazer!

Fall 2011 Easy Updos

I never put my hair up, besides the occasional ponytail when I go for a run. Naturally, I've always coveted the girls who can simply 'throw' their hair back in a messy bun that looks effortlessly fabulous. However, while peruing through the Fall runway collections, I found myself thinking the season's popular updos are simple enough for even me to do at home, without taking up too much of my morning prep time. Here are some of the season's favorite & easiest looks:

The Loose Braid (As seen at Lanvin, Pucci, Viktor & Rolf)

This popular summer style is making a nice transition into fall. The loose braid look fares best with previously textured hair--try it on 'day old' curled hair.

The Twist (As seen at Jil Sander, Peter Som, Bottega Veneta, Fendi, and Jean Paul Gaultier)

From dramatic beehives to simple chignons, this look is easier than it appears. For a clean look, blow dry hair smooth and use plenty of bobby pins to secure your twist. If you prefer a more textured look, teese the back of the hair (just a bit! we're not going for the Snookie pouf!) and use plenty of hairspray to create additional volume.

Fall Favorites

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year! There is nothing better than fall fashion. The season is full of comfy sweaters, amazing textures, deep colors, tailored jackets and beautiful dresses paired with dark tights! This fall, I am more excited then ever about the trends I am starting to see. Here are my top three favorite trends of the moment:

1. Feminine Blouses: I am seeing numerous blouses with bow ties at the neck and I am loving it! These feminine yet tailored blouses can make any girl feel like a million bucks. Although I am a huge fan of neutrals, I can't not obsess over the rich and vibrant colors of these tops. Pair them with a fitted skirt or a pair of dark skinnies, layer with a blazer, and you will be set!

2. Longer Lengths: Ladies, put away your mini skirts for the fall and fall in love with longer hem lines. I love the feminine feel of longer skirts and dresses. You don't have to think about what might be hanging out when you bend over. It is a worry free, chic look. If you are more petite, be careful of where the hem line hits you pair this look with heels to make you look longer and leaner.

3. One of the Boys: Menswear inspired looks can make any girl look and feel powerful! If you don't feel comfortable in a menswear inspired look, layer a flowy blouse underneath to add a feminine touch. This look isn't only for the office. For a night out, exchange your trousers for a pair of tailored shorts, tights and a pair of ankle booties.

When I get bored I tend to resort to stumbleupon.com, either that or food. Last night I was "stumbling" and came across a website called THREADSENCE.

Tickets to the Runway

Never been to Omaha Fashion Week? Now is your chance! All this week, the Troc will doing a special raffle to win a pair of tickets to Omaha Fashion Week going on from August 22-27th.

If you are not familiar with OFW, it is the Midwest's largest fashion event. This event allows designers to showcase their best work and network themselves with other designers, stylists, photographers and models.

In order to enter to win tickets for this highly anticipated event, you must do one of three things, which are:

1. Come into the Troc, buy something fabulous for $50 or more and enter your name in the raffle.

2. Bring in a gently used fashion accessory to the store (shoes, handbags, jewelry, etc.) and we will then donate the items to the Lydia House, along with entering your name in the raffle to win tickets.

3. First, go on Facebook and "like" the Trocadéro page. Then, each day this week the Troc team will be posting a fashion related trivia question and the first person to comment with the correct answer will be entered to win the tickets.

Fannying the Flames of Desire

I would consider myself a bit of a design junkie, so why then may you ask am I such a supporter of fanny packs, now becoming known by the alternative name "hip belts". My co-workers wondered if I was a bit off my rocker when I kept excitingly demonstrating how I could make the MZ Wallace sequined "Eve" bag into a fanny pack by wrapping the long cross-body strap around my waist twice. Perfect!

The Fanny Pack faced a hard reputation, becoming nearly blacklisted after it made history in the 80's because the only stylish one I ever came across in the last couple years was a metallic silver one by Marc Jacobs, bless his heart, but at the $495 price point I never quite got around to purchasing one. He and many other designers have expanded a bit more into the fanny pack market.

I love this new version by Marc Jacobs in cotton brocade I found featured on Elle.

I like this inspired slim and better yet, removable, drop pouch style found on Alice by Temperly.

For the sporty uni-sexy look try the American Apparel Nylon Cordura at a much easier $22 and available in fun candy colors you can buy one for every day of the week.

One reason I'm such a fan is, I dislike the idea of having to shove a wallet in my butt pocket, a la dude style, just to be hands free. I also started biking to work and everywhere else this summer and being a fan of fashion and functionality, have been exploring alternatives to my shoulder bags for stylish, comfortable and secure methods of carrying things.

I logged on to MZ Wallace's retail website the other day (not an uncommon activity for me) to sneak a peek at their upcoming fall collection. Instead of fantasizing about future trends, I wound up quite literally blindsided by their perfectly current "Summer E-Pop" collection, chock full of everything I am obsessed with at the moment. Punchy neon accessories, tribal touches, and even a few great beauty buys make this selection a must-see. See my top picks below!

I recently came across a new clothing line that caught my eye and is a gem that needs to be discovered!

Closed Clothing has only been around for a short while, but their line of garments are all original pieces created by owner and designer herself, Liz Larson. Having previously worked in Chicago and Los Angeles as a costume designer for box-office hit films, she wanted to merge here love for fashion and costume design into one signature line.

What makes Closed Clothing unique is that each piece is individually hand painted, so no two pieces are exactly alike. The material used to paint is non-toxic, non-fading and lightfast, so you don't have to worry about losing your custom design to the washing machine, however Closed Clothing does recommend hand washing if you can.

I first spotted the line at the Farmers Market downtown, where I sweet talked my pops into buying me one of their tanks. Not to mention, their prices are affordable so you don't have break the bank to own an original piece!

New pieces are added often, including women's, men's and soon to be children's apparel.

Teenie KKINI Bikini

Bikinis are apart of almost every girl's summer wardrobe. Girls secretly compete with one another to see who has the cutest swim suit. Your swim suit is a fashion statement. KKINI bikinis by Michaela Cawley definitely make a statement.

Michaela Cawley is an Omaha native and graduated from Westside High in 2002. She then ventured off to college in California and decided to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. Cape Town marked the spot where her love for bikinis and beachwear started. She collected many bikinis while she was there, and then decided that she wanted to start designing them.

After she finished her schooling in California, Cawley traveled back to Cape Town where she studied beachwear. So to make a long story short, she started her own line, KKINI, found a manufacturer, and her luxury swim line was born. KKINI is now sold online, in NYC, and in Cape Town.

Cawley will be featured in the Fall 2011 Omaha Fashion week. The Troc is also lucky enough to team up with her to exclusively carry her glamorous swimsuits in the store for a limited time only. My Two Hours with Alexander...

... McQueen, that is.

I posted a To-Do list a few weeks back for my recent trip to New York. The first item on the list was to see the Alexander McQueen "Savage Beauty" exhibition at the Met. Well... I came, I saw, and I absolutely loved it.

As I climbed my way up the Met steps, camera in hand, I couldn't wait to get inside and see all of his brilliant pieces from over the years. Once inside, I paid for admission (students are recommended to pay half-price, but may choose to pay whatever they please) and made my way to the gallery on the second floor. I could tell it was more popular than I expected because every tour guide didn't even need to hear your question; they knew you wanted to see McQueen.

After being carefully guided into a line of around 200 people, I silently waited my turn to enter the exhibit. Twenty-five minutes and two phone calls later later, I was allowed in. Sadly, my camera was not.

The first room was slightly daunting with it's pitch black walls, faint music playing eerily in the background and noticeable difference in temperature. Not to mention, the first dress was crafted from microscope slides dyed blood red. As I made my way through the crowds of people attempting to get up-close-and-personal with the garments, I was (dare I say it) a little creeped out. I overcame that feeling once I read a quote from McQueen that had been painted on the back wall. It read, "You've got to know the rules to break them... That's what I'm here for - to demolish the rules but keep the tradition." This made me smile.

The following room was much less dark and featured a variety of structured jackets and tailored pants he designed for his collections. I really appreciated how close I could get to the clothing in this room. I was stunned by how perfectly made everything was. It all seemed to be draped at the perfect angle, darted in the perfect spots. With this, I slowly began to realize that the thing things I was looking at weren't just clothes; they were art.

The next rooms featured many of McQueen's extravagant dresses that were the true show-stoppers in each of his shows. A dress and dramatic neckpiece covered in gold feathers caught my eye. I'd put it in a fall Look Book I made for the Troc sometime back and had gazed at it through my computer screen for upwards of ten minutes. And there it was, in all its beauty right in front of me. Needless to say, it was stunning.

My favorite was the fifth room, dedicated entirely to the accessories featured in runway shows. Being around them every day at the shop, I was in my element. Masked mannequins were adorned with headpieces, earrings, backplates and shoes that I couldn't even dream existed. It's amazing how each one was so carefully constructed down to the very last inch. And they were only accessories...

After that came many smaller rooms and hallways each styled in compliance with the pieces on display. One room for a collection titled Nihilism, full of dresses adorned with mud and locusts designed around primitivism became a hallway for McQueen's Highland Rape collection, inspired by his Scottish heritage. Here, I realized the breadth of inspiration McQueen used for his collections. His main mantra was romanticism, but the influences expanded much further. It was truly something to be admired. His ability to design incredible pieces of work that could be created from such differing muses was, and still is, truly unmatched.

The last few hallways were pieces of work themselves as I walked along broken floorboards and psychedelic video images played on stark white walls. Said videos were the backdrop for the last room featuring McQueen's final collection, Plato's Atlantis, before his untimely passing in 2010. The alien-like mannequins stood atop Armadillo heels made famous by Lady Gaga and were styled in short structured dresses with aquatic patterns. The collection resulted from McQueen's perception of a future in which our ice caps eventually melt and humans then become aquatic creatures. Ideas like this are what I found most interesting. His mind clearly had no limits and his clothing shows it.

I digress, the Savage Beauty exhibition at the Met was an experience for the books. After having seen it, I can barely put my opinions into words. This is my best shot.

Shopping in SoHo

I have recently realized that my closet is full of clothes I barely wear and lacking clothes I am dying to wear. Therefore, I have set out to solve this problem and slowly rejuvenate my clothing collection. To do so, whenever I buy a new piece clothing I promise myself I have to donate at least one piece I already have. I just packed three entire boxes of clothes to be given away. So now that I am in New York City with my days free to shop and stroll about, I took today to reward myself with a few items I've been wanting for the summer. Here's what I came back with.

Top:

Wedge booties in taupe - These were on my birthday list because I do not own a pair of booties (the horror!). They were also 40% off. Bingo!

Middle: L to R

Tie-bottom cotton tank in black - I read somewhere that tie-bottom shirts fit best on pear shaped women. Having a tiny waist and wider hips, I see myself wearing this with almost anything.

High-waisted denim skirt in grey - I knew this was a wardrobe staple from the second I saw it. The light grey shade is the perfect neutral to balance out any bright color.

Daisy crop top - Too cute not to buy. These shirts are great for hot weather when paired with a longer skirt.

Tie-bottom linen tank in white - I liked the first one so much, I got a second.

Floral print high-waisted shorts - I don't have enough prints in my closet, so these were a great find. Tuck a tank into these and you've got a super cute summer outfit.

Striped cotton tank - I have the same shirt in grey and have worn it to shreds. Another one of my wardrobe staples.

Well, I think that's about it for my shopping excursions in NYC. I'm coming home with a few great items I can't wait to put to use and finally getting rid of some things in my closet. Success.

Since this summer we've experienced some BLAZING temps, I thought I would finally share some tips for staying stylish and cool while keeping it professional at the same time.

Fabric choice is key in hot and humid situations. Look to lightweight fabrics like silk, bamboo, linen and other light knits and sheer fabrics to keep it breezy.

While fabrics like silk and linen require a little extra care and handling, the few extra steps are well worth the beautiful outcome and heat relief.

Lightweight tops and shirt dresses are perfect for this weather, offering ease and breath-ability. Blousy shirts look smashing tucked into a skirt or belted with a summer cardigan.

Stars of Omaha Fashion Week

The Fall 2011 Omaha Fashion Week is right around the corner and this year the Troc has the pleasure of partnering with them. Omaha Fashion Week has only been around for a couple of years and is already one of the largest fashion events in the Midwest. This great event gives young designers the opportunity to flaunt what they got! This week, I decided to interview one of the youngest designers, Kate Walz, that will be debuting her new collection this coming August. Walz is only 14 and this will be her third time designing for her line 'Just Because' for OFW. Most girls her age are busy drooling over boys, having sleepovers and gossiping with their girlfriends, but Walz is not your average 14-year-old. Here is what I found out:

1.How did you get involved with OFW for the first time?
An Omaha Fashion Week director saw some of my clothing pieces at Bellwether Boutique, requested that I apply for the spring show in 2010, and I was chosen.

2.Where did your love for fashion come from and when did it start?
I have always loved fashion, but I first started designing when I was eight years old, and just starting in 4-H. I participated in the designing and sewing competitions at the local and state level. I started selling my designs at Bellwether Boutique when I was 12 years old, and started Omaha Fashion Week when I was 13.

3. How did you learn to sew garments?
I took a couple of classes at Bernina when I was eight, and everything else was self-taught. All of my designs are original, designed and sewn by me, without using a store-bought pattern.

4. How old were you when you first started designing?
I was eight years old.

5. Where do you get your design inspiration? And where do you go for your own personal fashion inspiration?
I get design inspiration from almost anywhere; nature, vintage clothing, and architecture are some of my favorite. I get my own style inspiration mostly from anything vintage, and I am constantly wearing my great grandma's old jewelry. I just wear what I like, and don't particularly follow "trends."

6. Who are some of your favorite designers?
My favorite designer is Coco Chanel, and I would definitely say i am inspired by her designs. I also look up to Jane Round, Buf Reynolds, and Dan Richters for their talent and individuality.

7. Where are your favorite places to shop?
I don't really have a favorite place to shop, but I love the stores Republic of Couture, Nouvelle Eve, Coriander, and SheLa.

8. I know this is your third time designing for OFW. Are you just as nervous/excited as the first time?
I wouldn't say I'm as nervous as the first time because all of the other designers are all so supportive. I would definitely say that I am as excited as my first time in the show however, because I think it gets even more fun every show I participate in.

9. You are one of the youngest designers for OFW. Do you feel like your age has any affect on your performance?
I don't think that my age affects my performance because Omaha Fashion Week gives all designers the same chance no matter their age.

10. What advice would you give to a first time designer for OFW?
That their line makes sense and has a flow to it. Make sure that all of the designs in your collection have the same theme so they don’t look lost.

11. What are your future plans and goals?
I would love to move to New York and have my own store where I can sell my designs. I would eventually like to participate in other Fashion Weeks all over the world, but for right now am very grateful for Omaha Fashion Week.

What's in My Bag: Megan

Admittedly, I am the queen of oversized handbags. I hate feeling like I am leaving home without something I "need." For most of the year, you'll catch me hauling around a bag comparable to myself in size, but for the summer I am much too busy running around to be tied down with too much stuff. This makes a crossbody my go-to summer handbag. This also means I am forced to pare down to just the 'essentials'. Here's what made the cut:

-L.A.M.B. "Kiss Me" Card Case - I stash my credit cards, I.D., and miscellaneous receipts in here.

-Jane Iredale Pressed Powder - This stuff feels and looks INCREDIBLE. I am a huge fan of mineral makeup foundations. Although Bare Essentials is my all time favorite, this Jane Iredale powder is pressed-- a major pro since I'm throwing it in my bag. (Most mineral foundations that I've come across come in loose powder form. EEEK! Anyone who has ever had a eyeshadow or blush crumble in their purse know this is a huge no-no. Typically, I keep all cosmetics in a makeup bag, but there's no room amidst this mere essentials list!)

- Ralph Lauren Tortoise Aviators - I fell in love with these as soon as I tried them on (rarely can I say this about most sunglasses, unfortunately). I have a heart shaped face, so aviators are typically my go-to frames. The tortoise color has a really contrasted light/dark pattern, giving the shades a vintage vibe. Now, if only I could find the perfect pair of classic, oversized shades...

- M.Z. Wallace Platinum Leather "Bettie" Pouch: From Trocadero, of course! I'm head over heels for this little guy. He's the perfect wallet for a smaller handbag, and my future iPhone 4 will fit perfectly inside him.

-Monster coin purse - This pouch actually came with a gift card from Anthropologie I received last Christmas, and I loved him so much I had to put him to use. I usually feed him with coins for the meter.

-Emergen-C Fizzy drink mix - Whenever I feel a cold coming on or when I simply want something more than plain water, I mix a packet of Emergen-C in my water bottle. It's tasty and good for you!

-Pop-up Brush with Mirror - I MUST have a brush on me at all times. My hair is too long and too unruly to go without one. (That reminds me of something that didn't but definitely should have made my list: NAIL FILES! I am always in need of one of these! I'm not overly obsessed with my nails, but once my nail snags on something I cannot for the life of me leave it alone.)

-Lip Balm/Lip Gloss - Right now I'm carrying the Laura Mercier Hydra Tint in Nude. It's a great summer color (the perfect not too tan/not too pale nude), is mosturizing and has SPF 15. I'm also carrying Origins Once Upon a Shine lip gloss in Ruby Slipper. I own several of the Once Upon a Shine glosses, and they all deliver just enough lip color and have a pretty shimmer to them without being 'sparkly'.

-Moleskine Planner - I compulsively make lists and write everything down. Embarrassingly enough, I'm very territorial about my notebooks and planners...they're for my eyes only!

-Canon S95 - My new love affair. I have a lovely Nikon DSLR, but it's much too large to carry with me all the time. This camera is the perfect travel size and takes lovely photos!

-Purse: Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Clutch in Black - This purse can be worn as a crossbody, as a shoulder bag (as shown in the photo) or it can be used as a clutch. Talk about multifunctional! When the clock strikes midnight and my tiny summer purse morphs into my oversized handbag for the school year, it still makes the perfect evening clutch.

All About Eve: Styling MZ Wallace's Sequined Bag

MZ Wallace "Eve," $245

At first glance, it's impossible not to be drawn to MZ Wallace's stunning sequined "Eve" bag. The glitzy rose gold clutch has the distinct ability to catch the eye of passers-by. Customers often argue that this lovely little accessory isn't really the pillar of practicality, at which point I chose to demonstrate differently.

While you may be intimidated by its glam and glitz, I'm a firm believer that this bag can serve as the perfect compliment to soft neutrals at any time of day. Not only that, but it comes with an optional cross-body strap, meaning you can sling it over your shoulder during the day or carry it as a clutch at night.

Of course, this edgy-yet-feminine bag can easily become your evening staple. It can effortlessly be worn with other neutrals - I like it with a slouchy dress and tough booties for a brilliantly balanced ensemble (see outfit 1).

The real challenge, however, comes from styling it casually. You'd be surprised at how versatile sequins can be for day, and once this bag catches the light of the sun you won't be able to lock it away in a closet just for after-five use. Again, it pairs perfectly with a casual printed tank, soft jersey maxi skirt, feather earrings and strappy wedges (see outfit 2). In fact, I'd argue that the addition of the "Eve" makes this ensemble easier to wear for any occasion.

The way I'd personally wear it is with what has come to be known as my summer uniform - a soft and slouchy blouse with a pair of worn-in, high waisted denim shorts (see outfit 3). I'd just stack on a few everyday Alex & Ani bangles, slip on some sandals and head out for absolutely anything.

Working at the Troc and as a nanny for our owner, Alice, this summer, I imagined I'd be confined to the cornfields of Nebraska for the entirety of my stay. As it ends up, Alice has lent me out to another family as a nanny for their summer vacation in New York City. I recently found out the kids are both enrolled in camps from 9am-4pm. So, that leaves me with most of my daytime to roam the streets of the Big Apple completely solo. I've always been one to fly by the seat of my pants, but because I'll be alone most of the time, I've organized a list of my Top 10 Must-Do's in NYC. Here it goes.

1. Be in the presence of a legend: Ever since Alice brought it up to me, I've been dying to walk through the Alexander McQueen Exhibit at the Met. The collection on display is comprised of more than 100 garments from his 19 years in the fashion industry. From the looks of it online, the rooms are just as eye-catching as the clothes.

2. Schmutz around: I'll be traveling with a Kosher family for this trip, so I'm bound to have the chance to eat at a tried & true Jewish deli. I may not eat corned beef or stuffed cabbage (vegetarian, here), but I've always wanted to taste test some real Jewish delicacies. Knishes and blintzes, coming right up!

3. Reach for the stars: This one is a quintessential experience for any traveller to New York City. I've done it before, but I'm told the trek to the top of the Empire State Building is best at dusk. With a view that looks out over the city and a summer sunset, I know I'll be crossing this off my list fairly easily.

4. Get back to my roots: While searching for things to do during my days, I came across a site recommending I go green by visiting a rooftop organic farm. Apparently, there are quite a few located right inside the city, where one can pick up fresh produce while learning about their environmentally-friendly practices! Right up my alley.

5. Indulge my sweet-tooth: While watching Best Thing I Ever Ate, pastry chef Johnny Iuzzini recommended we try Chikalicious' fromage blanc cheesecake. Watching him eat this light and airy dessert surrounded by a moat of whipping cream, I couldn't help but put this on my to-do list.

6. Expand my wardrobe: The shopping scene in New York can't be beat... that's a fact. So, naturally, I hope to stroll through a few stores I can't find in Omaha. On my list - british retailer, TopShop, has haute couture style at affordable prices and Opening Ceremony brings new and experienced American designers to the forefront of fashion.

7. Eat a heavenly meal: Being an immense foodie, I'm willing to go all out for at least one meal while in the city. I'm deciding between Sushi of Gari and Les Halles. The former was recommended to me by Alice, who claims it's the best sushi she's ever eaten. The latter is chef Anthony Bourdain's home-base that cooks simple, delicious french food. Oh, decisions!

8. Remember where I came from: My father is a veteran of the Viet Nam war and I've always had an immense appreciation for those who serve our country. This is the main reason for my itch to pay my respects at Ground Zero. I haven't been to the site yet and I feel that it's such a huge part of New York and U.S. history, it's necessary I visit.

9. Embrace diversity: I get my fair share of latin-american culture while in Los Angeles during the school year. However, all other cultural neighborhoods pale in comparison to the ones in New York. I'm really hoping to devote an entire day to navigating my way through Little Italy, Chinatown and Greenwich Village to find souvenirs unique to their backgrounds.

10. Get artsy: As a graphic design major, I figured I could find a little time to expand my art-filled horizons at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. The space is the only museum in the country focused entirely on design from all eras and I can't wait to take a peek at what's inside.

I Spy...

Today I was on my friend Melissa's Ruby Press PR's blog and was drooling over the Fuji Instax Mini camera she posted about. All I could think about was how quickly could I get one in my grubby little hands? I've always been a fan of polaroid cameras; I still own various incarnations of them, but alas, it's nearly impossible or unaffordable to get film these days. I decided that this camera was the perfect item for me to take quick on-the-spot developed photos of friends who are traveling from far away destinations to attend our upcoming nuptials. One trip to amazon.com and my cute little instamax is on its way...While on Melissa's blog, I checked out some of her favorite sites. One name caught my eye: La Dolce Vita. "The sweet life" in Italian, it bears a resemblance to the Troc's tag line: The Good Life (a.k.a. the state of Nebraska's motto). When I checked out La Dolce Vita, I saw that her "About" page had a photo of the author (Paloma) and she is pictured sitting in front of a framed "Paris and Ses Monuments" map, just like the ones we sell at the Troc...and the same one I have hanging in my baby's room.I love discovering new things on other people's sites! What have you come across in your web travels that you found you could not live without?
